Winter 2008 Issue
With the current issue, January 2008, Capitol Report New Mexico completes its first year of publication. “”Serious stuff for serious people” has become the phrase for Capitol Report’s role. Our Web site makes it possible to fulfill this role. If you are new to the site, an explanation is in order. We find policy material that should be available to leaders of New Mexico. It’s not that the material is hidden, it just isn’t widely distributed. You have to look. That’s our job. Then we tell you about it, either in the print edition of Capitol Report or in our blog, and the post material here where it is easily accessible. We were pleased to find that our blog, http://capitolreportnm.blogspot.com, is up to tenth in popularity among New Mexico political blogs. Not bad for no gossip and no sex.
The logic is the same on the advertising side of the enterprise. Our advertising brings you ideas and information that probably would not otherwise get to you. Our advertising has grown with each issue. Respond to those advertisements. Buy the products or services and ask for information about their ideas.
In this issue, we feature a pre-session briefing from the Richardson administration and from the Legislative Finance Committee. The requirements of our production schedule—going to press in early December—meant that the briefings are a bit general. Final details didn’t come together until a few days before the session starts January 15. Even so, this is probably the first time for a broadly distributed briefing. A thorough look at the New Mexico economy provides context. The report is from economics professors Tony Popp, Jim Peach and Chris Erickson of New Mexico State University.
Thanks both to the LFC and the administration for jamming this new project into their busy year-end schedule. To be certain of getting the issue to you in a timely manner, we decided to bite a bullet and mail first class instead of our normal third class mail.
Other features:
Columnists Lonna Atkeson and Jose Garcia consider the political upheaval resulting from the retirement of Sen. Pete Domenici.
Interviews with two of the three main candidates for United States Senate. They consider the American Idea.
Health Care: Governor Richardson’s plan, New Mexico First and the Health & Human Services Interim Committee Recommendations.
More photos by Mark Bralley including a full page of the members of the Legislative Finance Committee, which is celebrating its 50th birthday.
Our production schedule also means that the magazine does not mention the death, December 27, of State Senate President Pro Tem Sen. Ben Altamirano of Silver City. Nor does the magazine discuss the decision of Rep. Joe Cervantes of Las Cruces to not run for Congress.
